I'm working at the UW and am trying to get into the Econ Doctorate program and apparently have to take the GRE.
It's been a few years.
Any advice?
Thanx!

Re: Any advice on doing GRE?
Mon, January 3, 2005 - 3:24 PMIf you're rich and have a lot of time, you can always take a Kaplan course. I read _GRE for Dummies_ and found it really helpful. Yeah, it's a dumb name, but pretty entertaining and thus easier to get through.
Good luck! -

Re: Any advice on doing GRE?
Mon, January 3, 2005 - 5:28 PMi would say that the Kaplan course is worth the investment (monetarily). of course, for most folks, the money is easier to sacrifice than the time
whereas GRE for Dummies is only like twenty bucks and you can read it on the bus
or in a house
with a mouse
or in a box.... -

Cool, picked up the Kaplan books
Thu, January 6, 2005 - 10:23 PMwent to the UW - eventually I get that refund after all - and got a few books - let's see now - um, REA's GRE Economics, GRE Exam Vocabulary Flashcards, Kaplan's GRE Exam 2005 edition, Kaplan's GRE & GMAT Exams Writing Workbook, and some of those one sheet plastic reminder sheets for Calculus I, Calculus Methods, and MicroEconomics.
Did see that GRE for Dummies but didn't get it. Read your post tonight a couple days later. Will browse it ...
I noticed the Vocab is really easy (used to be a writer), and I found UW stats on test scores for GRE for 2004 for those accepted, so I guess that's my goal.
Oh, Kimpulsive, I thought I saw you (or someone like you) down around UWMC - either that or it was when I was walking on the Ave.

Re: Any advice on doing GRE?
Wed, January 5, 2005 - 2:08 PMI did fine on the GRE after checking out a couple of different GRE study guides from the public library (and keeping them extra long -- they're always on request for other patrons and so you can never renew them). It had been a while for a lot of the stuff - algebra, logic, etc. - but I passed with above average scores. It's really just a matter of studying for it. You'll do fine! -

Re: Any advice on doing GRE?
Tue, March 15, 2005 - 5:23 PMIf you have the money, take the GRE Kaplan course, they have a high(er) score gurantee. You take the test as an assessment to see where you'll start, then if you don't improve over the entire course, you can either A. Get your Money Back, or B. Take the course over again. Also, if you're done with the course and take the GRE's...and you feel you didn't do well..you can retake the entire class for free. So definitely worth your money. I only know this because I actually did it. I score much higher each time we did the practice test, and actually did my best on the real GRE.
GRE Prep:
1. Review ALL math up to Trig...they won't have anything higher than that.
2. Practice the essay writing a few times.
3. Practice vocab and ROOT words...very important (I took the GRE's last month, and I must say...the Vocab section was the most difficult for me.)
4. Review review review...take a few practice tests online, they are important because the test is now computerized...so practicing your timing is smart.
Good luck.
