I just joined this tribe and there have been no new posts for a while, so I thought I would shake the boat and post one myself. What's the latest in the U-District? I've been in California all summer.

    Hi Gillian,

I just joined this tribe today. I attended UW a LONG time ago, but thought it'd be fun to see the latest on my dear alum.

I live in the Bay Area now...left Seattle a LONG time ago and I miss it (but not the rain).

When were you there? What did you study?

"were" and "did" do not enter this equation (unless you're asking where she got her 'hair did')----Gillian's still at the UW and it looks like she's about to enter her second year!

(i.e. unless she's morbidly focused, she hasn't quite figured out what her major is and is in the midst of changing it for the fourth or fifth time)

Well actually, Fuckerpants, IF that’s your real name, I am "morbidly focused," as you put it and I declared my major last quarter as Comparative History of Ideas. I don't plan on changing, although I may decide later to double major in something like Literature.

ANYWAY, I'm sorry for the hostility in the room and that not everyone can do such quick detective work as seems to be Fuckerpants’ specialty. I am, in fact, going into my second year and I love UW. What did you study when you were there, Lin?

DUDE!!!! i was a CHD major TOO!!!

but that was back in the mid nineties--i bet it's a lot more structured now. they let things like "History of Opera" and "Zimbabwean Drumming" count as valid credits toward the major.

i fuckin hated a lot of my peers though. in my senior year, we were talkin about what we'd do after college and some dorky fuck actually said: "i don't know; what do philosophers do?"

and he said it all smugly too.

scary thought though: i worked on a Toni Morrison project with someone and a year after we graduated, he served me coffee at Cup 'a Joe on Cap. Hill. not knockin him, he's a cool dude.

          but still--'whoah'

Oh god, I should have known you were a CHID major. Is everyone in this program like you? I mean, like, 'whoah.' I can't handle this randomness man.

no, no, no. i'm a jackass of my own accord. but i did actually love being a CHD major for all the freedoms it provided me along with the versatility in the curriculum.

BUT i got a question! are they still doing that "the other" bit. comparing ideas between advanced cultures and "primitive" ones that are imperialized by advanced cultures? that shit threw me a curve ball.

you see, when i'm not an orange kitty with a .44 pointed at it, i'm actually native american (grew up on the rez) and a lot of that shit was catering towards white folks or folks that came from 'advanced' societies. all fine and dandy but when i'd speak up in class it was like fuckin EF Hutton ---and NOBODY would ever dispute what i said----cuz they didn't want to be all politically incorrect and shit.

i hope it's gotten better. or at least modified.

Yeah, "the other" is still alive and well and living in Kane 210.

damn. you should tell 'em you're half cherokee or something. just as a social experiment. and see how much power it gives you in the discussion groups. it's pretty fuckin creepy.

be warned though, if you play the native card, you'll inevitably be asked what you think about the Makahs and their whaling and other shit that's not even related to the Cherokee nation.

I actually am part Cherokee, but not enough to mention.

So when did you graduate? Did you study abroad? do you have aim so we dont have to keep posting on this board?

hahaha----good idea actually. but 'no', i don't have any IM. you see how rapidly i post right? i'd be up forever (I was ADDICTED to IM at work--thank god i'm free at last)

graduated in '98. didn't study abroad until after i graduated (i.e. until i had money; i couldn't fathom backpacking or staying in a hostel---just my rapid vanity peaking through)

but the IMA-----oh my god. that thing looks so fuckin beautiful now. i'm thinking of taking some classes JUST so i can work out there...

Yeah... I've been there 3 times. I'm pathetic. It is beautiful though. I want to take a yoga class just for the view.

i graduated from the uw a few years ago with a ba in philosophy. this year, my sister just graduated with bachelors in english and also in american ethnic studies. glad i graduated first so as to be the first one in the fam to graduate with a degree in the states. otherwise, i would have been really left behind. one sis with a double major, the other graduating next year (in 3 years) with a degree from seattle u... i'm still in seattle seeing what happens...

I like to go to class because I can look at hot girls. I want to study CHID because I don't know what else I could study that would bea as useless and I can use it to end up as another teacher. My name is Brandon and I know Gillian.

no, no Brandon---taking CHD will throw you in the midst of a bunch of liberal, bleedin heart, don't shower, type anti-Republicans that you'll probably get tossed out of your precious 'College Republicans' club.

the REALLY hot girls are usually in the "English" classes and some are "Poly-Sci" majors----THAT'S where you gotta go.

...and fuck all the B.S. majors----those folks are too focused on their 'careers'.

No seriously FUCK all the BS majors. Because they are so focused on their 'careers' that is the easiest place to get a quick non-comittal lay -- and they are usually the kinky ones. Under no circumstance Brandon should you ever fuck the following majors:

                                  Psychology
                                  Drama

                                  that's about it.

I attended the UW, off and on, from Winter Quarter '94 through Winter Quarter '99. I took '98 off to quit smoking, quit drinking to vicious extremes, go on tour with the band, etc. I went back to finish the last ten credits of my Creative Writing B.A. I really should have been a Music Major at the UW, but, then again, I should've gone to Shoreline for their Audio Engineering program back in '91, instead of running around Broadway getting a liberal arts A.A. Ah, well. I'm working on the Shoreline Digital Audio Engineering thing now, doing a related internship, playing in a healthier band, makin' house payment in Columbia City...things more or less worked out, and I didn't even have to go to grad school.

I transferred in from SCCC with an A.A. for Win. '94. I spent much of those first two quarters in the gone-but-not-forgotten ACC, which is now a parking garage (I think) near Agua Verde. The UW Police made a lot of bread off me with parking tickets, eh...
